The Browning Double Automatic Shotgun is a short recoil operated [2] semi-automatic (Auto Loading) 12 gauge shotgun with a 2 ¾ inch chamber. This shotgun was offered in both aluminum and steel receiver configurations[3] with the aluminum receivers featuring a variety of finish colors.[4] The 3 versions offered include the Standard as the only steel receiver version, Twelvette, and Twentyweight which used the aluminium receiver. All Double Automatic's are 12 gauge. Various configurations were available for choke, barrel length, and barrel type. The firearm was produced between 1955 and 1971, with production volume of approximately 67,000.

Action[edit]

Numbers

This firearm features a unique loading port on the left side of the receiver.[5] As the first round is loaded, the shell is lifted by a mechanism and chambered by the bolt; once the bolt is closed, the lifting mechanism returns to the resting position below the loading port, where the next round can then be loaded. Upon firing the chambered round, the shell in the loading port is automatically chambered. The total capacity is 2 with 1 chambered round and 1 in the loading port.

I just bought a Double Automatic with a SN of A44xx and would like to date it. It doesn't have the rivets at the back of the fore end but it does have the rounded fore end and the short-radius round knob stock. It came with a 25.5' recessed rib skeet barrel and a plain matted 27.5' modified barrel. It makes a perfect companion for the steel frame one that I have with a recessed rib 29.5' full choke barrel. All barrels interchange. Do the serial numbers for both the alloy and the steel models run in sequence with only the letter prefix different or do they have separate sequences? I would also like to know when Browning make the various changes such as the fore end contour, stock radius, solid recessed rib to vent rib. I know that at some point they started to prefix the sn with a year but prior to that they are somewhat of a mystery.
