Wow, that is the first non red/white that I've seen with the 990's. Granted, I can only recall seeing two back in the day - Eddie Roman's and Aaron Dull's:
Other things varied too. For one, the levers that first came on them were Odyssey RX-5(?). The disc also varied - some had the S and some had the round holes. I'm not 100% sure if this photo is from '86 or '87 but you can see the levers and disc is different than Scott's. I have the same levers and disc in the '87 tour poster but I think that picture is newer since I have the mini bars and the Spinmaster II. So... I think that makes this photo late 86/early '87 at the newest.
The first 2-tone beat I got was grey and white. Definitely in 1986 and came with the S cutout disc.
If you look on the spec sheet on my site, they say 'components subject to change without notice'.
One thing I suspect also suspect is that there was some older '85 being sprayed 2 tone. *Maybe* if you got a frame/fork only you'd get an '85 and the tapered fork Taiwan ones were just completes? I don't know for sure on that one.
I am also piecing together a blue/gray one but plan to get an unpainted one sprayed.

  2. Re: SKYWAY serial number i.d. On the round part that your cranks go into, it is called a bb, bottom brackett.i do not think the serial number has anything to do with production date on those.since they also stamped the production date beside it.I think they were made 85 to89 maybe.rp.

Does it have a 1inch headset ?
Do the letter prefix's on the SN match the JAJ ?
or are they something completely different.
1989 _seems_ to be the changeover year to fitting the canti mounts & the 1 1/18th headset.
The cro mo Quad frames seem hard to exactly date from ~1986 to 1990 unless you bought it new or can find someone with a close serial number who bought it new like I did.
This one is an 1989 model according to the original owner , who I got the JAJXXX SN off...

All I need is a set of 1/8th headset shims to fit my 1inch Bottema's & Tuff neck into it & I'll have the ultimate best of both worlds Quadangle. More triangles in the frame than you can poke a stick at , cro mo tubing vs mild steel , good welding all round & a roomier ride.
Unless there are people who regularly thrash their loopback 1980 Quads on the track & street , with no worries about bending them....Brave souls with fat wallets
maybe.
Retro bikes have some distinct advantages , especially when it comes to Quadangles.

The 1969 models are identified by the adding of an extra 0 at the end of the frame marking putting the number series into the 100,000's. Machines re-exported in 1970 were stamped with a 'Y' suffix to indicate that they were 1970 models and therefore eligible for the increased warranty.
